Week of February 2, 2015

1/31/2015

Oh dear!  I am falling behind...so sorry for missing last week's entry!

Accelerated Reader Progress
Congratulations to Alex, Brandon, Christian, Josh, Justin, Mareia, Makenna, Christine, Lukas, Mia, and Alan for achieving their Trimester 2 point goals with 85% or better accuracy! Come on, everyone, I know you can do it! You have until February 27th to make those goals!

Spirit Assembly
Congratulations to January's Spirit Award Winners: Josh, Justin, Celine, and Kailani!

District Conference
The annual District Conference was held on Friday afternoon/evening at Sulphur Springs School. We learned a lot during the many breakout sessions on topics of interest to parents, teachers, and administrators in our district.  We also had the chance to meet our new Superintendent and hobnob with our school board members. Thank you so much to the parents who were able to attend.

Valentine Grams
Valentine Grams will be for sale all week.  You can send a Valentine Gram to any student at our school, to your favorite teachers, or even to yourself!

Valentine's Day
We will be having a Valentine exchange in class on Thursday, February 12th.  If you would like to participate, be sure to bring in a Valentine for every student in the class--there are 27 Cool Kids now.  See the flyer I sent home for a complete list of students.  This is a voluntary activity, just for fun.

100th Day of School!
Monday, February 9 is the 100th day of school this year! Wow, time sure flies!  We will be having an assembly in the morning that day with Zero the Hero as our guest.  Students are not required to make a 100th day project as they did in first grade, but are welcome to make one if they desire.

Groundhog Day
Monday, February 2 is Groundhog Day.  Will
Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow?  If he does, folklore says that there will be six more weeks of winter weather.  If it is cloudy and he cannot see his shadow, then spring will come early. You can check out the fun at www.groundhog.org.

Writing a Personal Narrative

Social Studies
This week we are starting our new social studies unit on heroes.  We will be learning about what makes a hero and reading biographies about many heroes.
Important vocabulary to know for this unit:
hero - a person who does brave or good things
leader - someone who helps people decide what to do
    biography - a non-fiction account of a person's life
autobiography - a non-fiction account of a person's life written by that person

We will be reading about Alexander Graham Bell, Jane Goodall, Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Amelia Earhart and others.

    Things to think about:

    • Who is your favorite hero? Why?
    • Can an animal be a hero?
    • Does being a hero mean that you are famous?
    • Can YOU be a hero in someone's life?
